Summer General Meeting of the Millerton Area Watershed Coalition

Watershed Biological Assessment and Managing for Biodiversity in the Sierra Foothills

The Millerton Area Watershed Coalition (MAWC) Steering Committee is inviting interested landowners and the public to attend their Summer Quarterly meeting on Wednesday, July 9th to learn more about the watershed program.  The meeting will be held at the Friant Learning Academy in the town of Friant.  It will begin at 6:00 pm and last two hours.  This meeting will include a combined presentation by David Hartesveldt, President of Live Oak Associates, Oakhurst on the biological assessment recently completed in the Millerton Area Watershed Study Area.  Chuck Peck, Executive Director of Sierra Foothill Conservancy will present on Managing for Biodiversity in the Sierra foothills.

David Hartesveldt and his firm for 17 years have had extensive involvement in environmental assessments in the Sierra foothills on behalf of landowners, developers, local, state and federal government agencies and conservation organizations such as the Sierra Foothill Conservancy.  He will be sharing the results of his recently completed assessment of the Millerton area watershed’s condition as it relates to wildlife habitat and biodiversity.  Chuck Peck is a founder of the Sierra Foothill Conservancy and currently serves as the Executive Director.  He will discuss his research related to land management practices and how the Conservancy and other property owners manage their land to enhance wildlife habitat for biodiversity.

This is the third in a series of educational programs that the Coalition and their partners have sponsored.  It is hoped that these programs will provide land owners and residents of our foothill communities an opportunity to learn first hand how to manage their properties in ways that improve our watershed areas for water quality, fire safety, minimizing the effects of noxious weeds, improving soils and protecting our natural resources in useful and practical ways.
